One-yr-old baby operated for cataract

Bangalore, Sept 14: A 12-month-old baby was successfully operated upon for cataract on both the eyes, at Vidya Superspeciality Eye Hospital here.

The baby's mother Pushpalata suspected about Chiranjivi's poor vision as he had difficulty in identifying her. On noticing the white opacity in the cornea of both the eyes, she rushed the infant to hospital.

Dr KM Suresh Medical Director of the hospital who diagnosed the baby with 'congenital cataract in both eyes' sucessfully performed the surgery at a concessional rate yesterday.

''The case was of high risk as the child is only 12-months-old and should be operated under general anaesthesia. Further, the surgery involves the most delicate sensory structures,'' he said.

After removing the cataract, the doctor implemented intraocular lenses in both the eyes using latest technology of phacoemulsification.

Pushpalata and Chiranjivi's father Nanjundaiah, an agriculturist, were brimming with joy after the successful surgery.

Dr Suresh said cataract, normally seen in old age, was rare at birth, in childhood and adolescene.
