Meghalaya edges past other North Eastern states in NRHM
Shillong, Sep 14 (UNI) Meghalaya has edged past other North Eastern states in initiating implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), launched by the Union Government last year.
The state had already selected about 5000 women health workers for its 6000 villages.
Dr C Stone, State Programme Manager, RCH-II, informed this while delivering an address at a technical session on NRHM on the second day of the ongoing public information campaign here.
Dr Stone said an estimated 19 lakh rural population of Meghalaya would be provided with dedicated and quality healthcare services under the NRHM. He said the scheme had been launched to remove disparity in healthcare services to the poor people.
He also pointed out the scheme also included the health determiners such as sanitation, nutrition and safe drinking water with participation of people from the grassroots level in managing the establishments.
Dr P Chyne from the family welfare and maternity and child health wing of the Directorate of Health Services said the NRHM had also included the earlier programmes like malaria eradication, TB control while giving priority to strengthening infrastructure and detection and cure of disease in the primary health centres itself.
He hoped by 2012, when the scheme would be implemented totally, the health services in the state would notice a quantum jump.
Regional Director of Union Ministry of Health&Family Welfare, Shillong, Dr M Palit while explaining the scheme said the government had adopted the scheme to build quality health service for the people in seven years.
The futuristic scheme had included all the components associated with health, and all the North Eastern states had been considered as high focussed areas under the scheme.
