Port Blair, Sep 14 (UNI) A court sentenced a person to ten-year imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on him for raping a minor girl.

District and Sessions Judge M S Dwivedi yesterday convicted the accused Dhiren Mazumdar under section 376 of the IPC. The court also sentenced him to an additional imprisonment for three-and-a-half year and fined Rs 1,000 under section 506 of IPC for threatening to kill the victim and her family members if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

The 13-year-old girl was repeatedly raped by the 62-year-old convict in 1997. The girl was married after a few days and soon abandoned by her husband when he found her pregnant.

Unable to bear the social stigma, the victim disclosed the incident to her family after which her father convened a village meeting where the accused admitted his crime.

The matter was then reported to the police. The girl, later, delivered a baby and the DNA test confirmed that the convict was the biological father of the child.
