New Delhi, Sep 14 (UNI) Four women of a family were washed away in flash floods in Gadag district of Karnataka while heavy monsoon rains lashed Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

According to sources, the victims were labourers who were returning to their village late last evening when the flash floods struck. Ten people were rescued while four women of a family swept away. In a similar incident, a 60-year-old person was washed away in the swollen floodwaters of river Kimin in Arunachal Pradesh.

After a lull in rainfall for over a week, heavy showers lashed Delhi early this morning, plummeting the mercury in the Capital and bringing tremendous relief to people. About 52 mm of rainfall had been recorded in Delhi since last night till 1730 hours, the weather office said.

The rainfall led to a sharp fall in mercury, providing tremendous relief to Delhiites from the sultry conditions of last week.

The minimum temperature dropped almost four degrees to 22.9 degrees Celsius, from 26 degrees yesterday while the maximum fell from 36 degrees yesterday to 30.2 degrees today, four degrees below normal.

Ending a prolonged dry spell, the South West Monsoon revived in parts of Andhra Pradesh, raising hopes among farmers in the drought-prone Rayalaseema and Telangana, which received good rains in the last 24 hours.

Besides the two regions, Kurnool, Dharmavaram, Arogyavaram, Dhone, Pathikonda, Tadapatri and Wanaparthy also recorded rainfall.

Rains and thundershowers also occurred at most places in Kerala.

Kolkata remained mostly dry with no or very little rainfall since the last six days which in turn led the mercury to soar making conditions sultry.

According to the forecast for the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur at most places in Konkan and Goa, coastal Karnataka. Heavy rains are likely to occur at most places in Kerala and Andaman and Nicobar and at many places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
