Elephant dies of anthrax
Idukki, Sep 14 (UNI) An elephant in the Periyar Tiger Reserve in this district has died due to anthrax, officials said here today.
The Centre for Infectious Diseases at Thiruvananthapuram, which conducted the test on the blood samples had confirmed that the elephant died of anthrax, sources said.
The carcass of the elephant, which died on September ten, was burnt by the authorities to prevent the spread of anthrax.
Meanwhile, checkposts had been told to stop any cattle without ear-tags from entering the reserve. A crisis management team had also been formed.
