East Bengal sledgehammer Mohammedan Sporting 4-2
Kolkata, Sep 14 (UNI) Goalkeeper Prashanta Dora allowed East Bengal a free run as red-and-gold brigade feasted on a 4-2 win over Mohammedan Sporting in the Sahara Calcutta Football League match here at the Salt Lake Stadium today.
First half was a goal riot. However, with a more competent man under the bar, Sporting might not have returned empty handed.
East Bengal opened the account as early on 35th second. Club's new Brazilian recruit Marcio Fernandez Tomaz's galloping run forced Sporting defence to lose possession. Saumik Dey centre found Rahim Nabi lobbing the ball to see a vintage Asim Biswas beating Dora with a sparking header (1-0). The latter gleefully headed home as there was no challenge from the keeper. The black-and-white brigade came back strongly and restored parity within five minutes. Bijen Singh's corner took a small deflection and went straight in leaving East Bengal leaving keeper Abhra Mondal stranded.
And in the 12th minute Sporting went ahead as Mike Okoro set up the opportunity. His floater from right fell nicely for Raman Vijayan. The striker's header rebounded off the post, but K.
Kulothungan, who came charging in from behind, placed it home. Abhra and the defence was all over the place.
Marcio's equaliser in the 20th minute, however, had class written all over it. It was a result of an excellent first touch as he chested down a Chandan Das free-kick, shielded his markers, Douglas da Silva and Subhashis Roychowdhury and from top of the box wrong footed Dora with clinical placing.
Things were pretty even till the midway in the first half. Then East Bengal coach Roberto Carlos Pereira da Silva made a change that turned the game on its head. Vincent Pires came in for an off colour Covan Lawrence and the red-and-gold started to gain the upper hand.
Pires not only helped settle nerves in defence but also was incisive in counter attacks. In the 31st minute, an overlapping Pires set up the third goal for the winners.
His cross from right was headed home by Rahim Nabi. Once again Dora missed the flight of the delivery.
The fourth goal, at the stroke of half time settled the issue for the day.
Chandan Das scored from the spot after Debjit Ghosh brought down Marcio.
With this win, East Bengal moved to the top of the league table with 16 points from seven matches, while Sporting stayed on 15.
In the second half, things remained as they were and Ashim and Snehashis failed to increase the lead even with open chances.
