Andaman court sentences 10 year imprisonment to rapist

Port Blair, Sep 14 (UNI) A person was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 in default for raping a minor girl here under IPC section 376, District Court sources said here today.

The District and Sessions Judge M S Dwivedi yesterday convicted the accused Dhiren Mazumdar an additional imprisonment for three years and fined Rs 1000 along with an imprisonment for more six months for threating to kill the victim and her family members if she discloses the incident to anyone under section 506 of IPC, the source added.

The incident occurred in 1997 when a 62-year-old man repeatedly raped a 13 year old girl and threatened to kill her if she discloses the matter to anyone, sources said.

After a few days the girl was married and was soon abandoned by her husband when he found the girl pregnant with three months.

Unable to bear the social stigma the victim disclosed the incident before her family after which her father convened a village meeting where the accused admitted his crime and payed Rs 100 fine to the victim.

The matter was then reported to the police and criminal law was set in motion. The girl later delivered a baby and the DNA test confirmed that the accused was the biological father of the child, sources added.
