Youth proved guilty for murder but escapes with fine

New Delhi, Sep 13 (UNI) A youth who stabbed his cousin to death three years ago was today fined Rs one lakh by a city court which ruled that Rs 50000 of the fine amount would go to the victim's family.

Additional sessions judge Rajiv Mehra today imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on 23-year-old Gunjan Paliwal who had, on February 14, 2003, stabbed his cousin sister Anju Sharma at her home in Rajender Nagar.

Though the prosecution managed to prove the accused involvement in the crime, Gunjan still managed to escape with a fine.

Gunjan Paliwal was sentenced under section 308 of the Indian Penal code (attempt to culpable homicide).

Gunjan had come to the house of his cousin on that day on pretext of taking his folder. When Anju went to her kitchen, he followed her and stabbed her from behind.

During the trial, the defence alleged that Anju's sons teased Gunjan's girlfriend which led him to take this extreme step while the prosecution alleged that the crime was committed for money.
