Monsoon rains lash Kerala, HP, parts of Andhra Pradesh

New Delhi, Sep 13: Monsoon rains lashed Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Andhra Pradesh while the rest of the country has been generally dry.

In the capital, it was a dry day today even though clouds and North Westerly winds brought some relief from humid conditions.

Overcast sky and Northwesterlies brought the maximum temperature down to 35 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was 25 degrees Celsius.

After bountiful rains in the last week of August, which saw the Capital receive 210 mm of rainfall, Delhi has witnessed dry weather conditions all through the last week.

South West Monsoon has been vigorous in Kerala with Quilandy recording maximum rain of 14 cm.

Rain or thunder showers occurred at most places in Lakshadweep, the local weather office said.

Heavy rainfall reported in cm was Kannur 12, Vadagara and Thalassery 11 each, Kozhikode and Karippur airport nine each and Mannarakkad and Paravur eight each.

Rains lashed isolated places in Kangra and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh while the residents of other areas had respite from wet conditions during the last 24 hours, the met office said.

Barring 16.8 mm rainfall at Palampur, 13.2 mm at Dharamshala and 6.4 mm at Solang Nullah in Kullu district, the remaining mid and lower hills received no rainfall till 0830 hrs.

The met office said Dhundi and Bhang Manali, both in Kullu district, also recorded 1.2 and 0.2 mm of rainfall.

The sky was clear over the districts of Kinnuar, Lahaul Spiti and Chamba with no report of any rain or snowfall during the last 24 hours.

However, the day and night temperatures in the state witnessed a drop of few degrees in the last few days with Patsio in Lahaul Spiti district and Kalpa in Kinnuar district recording night temperature of three degrees C and 8.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

The sky was cloudy over Shimla and other adjoining areas after a bright sunny morning and people took their woollens to face the cold mornings and evenings.

The state capital recorded a night temperature of 14.4 degrees Celsius.

Rains occurred at a few places over Telangana and Rayalaseema regions and were isolated over Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Kaleswaram (Karimnagar dist) recorded very heavy rainfall of 24 cm and Vempalli (Cuddapah dist) heavy rainfall of 12 cm, followed by Jagitiyal and Sultanabad (both Karimnagar dist), Khanapur (Adilabad dist), Pulivendala and Rayachoty (both Cuddapah dist) and Venkatapuram (Khammam dist) five each.

Hyderabad Meterological Centre Director M Satya Kumar said rain or thundershowers were likely at many places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh in the next 24 hours. There would be an increase in rainfall activity all over the state, he added.
