Naval team to ski to South Pole

Kochi, Sep 12 (UNI) A team of ten intrepid Naval personnel will undertake a skiing expedition to the South Pole in December, seeking to set the world record for being the first defence forces team to ski traverse to the Pole since 1912.

An official release here today said, Chief of the Naval Staff Arun Prakash formally announced the expedition. ''The Antarctica expedition is a landmark venture for the country and the Navy.

Representing a microcosm of India, the expedition will carry the hopes and aspirations of our countrymen and reflect the qualities of team spirit and indomitable will that our fine Service embodies,'' the Naval Chief said.

It will take the Naval team, led by Cdr Satyabrata Dam, nearly 15 to 20 days and ten to 12 hours of active walking each day, to achieve their objective. The team will be tested by inaccessibility of region, inhospitable weather, temperatures ranging from minus ten to -35 degrees Celsius and high altitude zones of above 3,000 metres.

The other members of the team will be Lt Cdr K S Balaji, who will be the deputy leader, Lt Cdr Gaurav Pande, Lt Avinash Khajuria, Surgeon Lt Ajay Sharma, MCERA Raj Kumar, Petty Officer Medical Assistants Rakesh Kumar and Vikas Kumar, Brijendra Singh, Manoj Vats and Sonam Tamchos.

The members belong to different parts of the country including Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Ladakh.

A demanding fitness schedule, coupled with a ski expedition to the Greenland Arctic ice cap, formed part of the training undertaken for the expedition, the release said.
