Baramulla, Sep 11 (UNI) Security forces foiled an infiltration bid when they killed two heavily armed militants in Gurez sector in Jammu and Kashmir today.

Official sources said security forces guarding the Line of Control (LoC) noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) at Tulail in Gurez sector early this morning.

When challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened fire, which was returned, they said.

A defence ministry spokesman in Srinagar said two militants were killed while trying to cross over from PoK.

This was the first major bid by militants in the area after the infiltration routes received light snowfall in the first week of this month.

A senior army officer said that a large number of militants are waiting across the border to infiltrate into this side from PoK before the high passes are closed due to snowfall.

He said infiltraton was going on, though the number has decreased against the previous years.

The officer said security forces have intensified foot and night patrolling on the borders to foil any militant attempt to sneak into this side or smuggle in arms and ammunition.
