Corruption biggest threat to human rights: NHRC chairman
Kolkata, Sep 8 (UNI) National Human Rights Commission chairperson and former Chief Justice of India Justice A S Anand has termed corruption as the biggest threat to full human development and human rights.
Addressing a seminar on 'Human Rights: Sine Qua Non of Democratic Governance' at Merchant Chamber of Commerce here today Dr Anand said that corruption not only inhibits enjoyment of human rights but also undermines the rule of law, distorts the development process and poses a great threat to human security.
''Only zero tolerance could eliminate the menace,'' Justice Anand said.
Expressing concern at the magnitude and size of corruption he said unless it was checked the government and people would have to pay a heavy price because it will lead to destruction of economy.
''It is unfortunate, but true, that growing politicisation of public services and criminalisation of politics have contributed in no small measure to let corruption flourish and the corrupt not only go scot-free but even earn a position of false respectability,'' he observed.
