Shekawat suggests media to highlight common man's issues

New Delhi, Sep 7 (UNI) Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat today urged the newspaper owners, editors and other journalists to highlight issues and news concerning the poor and weaker sections in their respective publications.

Releasing a commemorative book ''Poorn Pradakshna'' on the founder editor of the Jagran Group of Newspapers, late Mr Purnachandra Gupta here, Mr Shekhawat said these sections do not read the newspapers because there is nothing for them in their contents.

Mr Shekhawat said it is true that the newspapers should criticise the Government and the administration, but it is also to be ensured that such criticism is constructive and is done with the objective of finding out solutions to the problems and not for simply finding faults.

He recalled that a number of issues concerning these sections are debated in the Parliament. These proceedings do not reach the common men because the newspapers, very often, concentrate on political and commercial news.

Paying rich tributes to late Mr Purnachandra Gupta, he said that he was a freedom fighter. He reminded that during the freedom struggle, almost all the newspapers and their editors served in a spirit of mission and patriotism. They had no commercial interests and so their writings could influence the people and motivate them to give several sacrifices for the country.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, Parliamentarians Mr Amar Singh, Mr Rajiv Shukla, Ms Jaya Pradam Mr R K Dhawan, Mr Chandan Mitra and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
