Notice to Punjab on empowering Panchayats to appoint teachers

Chandigarh, Sep 7 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notices, for October 16, to the Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats secretary and the other officers concerned on a petition that sought directions to quash the notification of empowering the Panchayats for appointing primary teachers.

The court's division bench of Justices Jagdish Singh Khehar and S D Anand asked the respondents to explain as to how they could make these appointments even after knowing about the High Court decision of July 25, 2006 vide which the instructions of May 5, 1975 providing for classification of list of scheduled castes what has come to be known as the reservation-within-reservation , had been quashed.

The petition has been filed by Depinder Kaur and four others seeking directions to quash the merit list of 233 including 94 scheduled caste candidates and the subsequent appointment of ETT teachers made.

The ADC Ludhiana has been issued notice as he was the chairman of the selection committee that finalised the selection list.
