IMD says earthquake can't be predicted, watching North East
New Delhi, Sep 7 (UNI) The Centre today clarified that earthquakes could not be predicted but the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely watching seismic activity in the North East.
In view of the media reports, about 'possibility of earthquake in North East tomorrow' and the Asom government's letter to the Centre, the Union Home Ministry made this clarfication after contacting IMD to ascertain the facts.
"There is no established scientific technique available anywhere in the world to predict the occurance of earthquake in terms of space, time and magnitude. However, IMD is closely watching the seismic activity in the North East and other parts of the country..," IMD sources said.
The Centre has sent two teams of National Disaster Response Force to flood-affected Gujarat.
In response to the Rajasthan government's request for 5000 tents, the Centre is immediately sending first chunk of 4110 tents as immediate relief.
