Fears of flood rise in Banswara

Jaipur, Sep 7 (UNI) Fears of flood have risen in Banswara district after heavy rains since yesterday and discharge of water in large amounts from Gandhisagar dam and Kota barrage.

Several houses have collapsed due to continuous downpour over the past 24 hours and several roads have been blocked.

Banswara in Udaipur division has witnessed over 300 mm rains over the past 24 hours and several low-lying areas have been flooded.

Many bridges have also collapsed leading to blockade of the Jaipur-Udaipur highway.

Several roads on the Aklera-Bhopal way have also been badly damaged due to the rains.

According to irrigation department, 15 gates of Kota barrage were opened with an outflow of 4.66 lakh cusecs water after discharge from the 1312 feet Gandhisagar dam on Chambal river in Mandsor district.

Kota district administration, sensing the outflow of water fom the Kota Barrage, got the low lying areas adjoining Chambal river in Kota, Bundi and Dholpur districts evacuated.

With the discharge of water from Kota Barrage today, the low-lying areas of Nayapura, Gavdi, Khedli in Kota were inundated. Many people settled there had to take refuge in safe shelters. The district official has asked the people to evacuate the flood-prone areas as soon as possible.

The overflowing canals in Dungarpur district have obstructed six roads in Sagwara, Galiyakot and Bichiwada.

The excess water is also being discharged from Mahi dam in Banswara district.

According to sources, 4.33 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from Gandhisagar dam today afternoon. There has been inflow of 3.70 lakh cusecs due to heavy downpour in the area.

Weather department recorded 300 mm rainfall in Banswara over the past 24 hours. It measured 290 mm in Bagidora, 290 mm in Shergarh and Sajjangarh, 248 in Kesarpura, 220 in Garhi, 190 in Danpur, 160 in Kushalgarh, 150 mm in Arthana and 100 mm in Mount Abu.

The weather has remained cloudy in the state capital making the climate cool and pleasant. The city recorded a maximum 31.2 degree Celsius and minimum of 22.6 degree Celsius.
