China for trade equilibrium b/w Asian neighbours
Beijing, Sept 7: China has called upon India to open up its trade to maintain trade ''equibilirium'' between the Asian neighbours.
Talking to an Indian press delegation here, Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Quan said, ''China is in a position to expand its trade with all countries for mutual benefit. However, trade surplus is exerting monetary pressure on the Chinese economy.'' He pointed out that during the first seven months of this year, China's exports to India amounted to seven million dollars as against import of six million dollars. The Minister regretted that Sino-Indian trade was not ''compatible'' to the size of their economies.
Though there are different political systems, ''we lack knowledge of each other and also mutual understanding.'' He supported a suggestion for a joint economic and trade committee to ensure smooth and pleasant Indo-China trade relationship.
On India's efforts to obtain a permanent seat in the UN Security Council, he said China looks forward to India playing a greater role in international affairs. ''There is need for developing countries to get due representation in the Council. I think there is a great degree of change in the situation and the matter is expected to be settled in a democratic manner through consensus.'' He said China was committed to join efforts to combat international terrorism, which ''not only poses a challenge to India and China but to entire humanity and the international community. We will have to safeguard not only our national interest but also contribute to protect the international community in this regard.''
