AHRC, AI demand safety of lawyers in Manipur
Imphal, Sep 7 (UNI) The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) and the Amnesty International (AI) have urged the Chairperson of the Bar Council of India to ensure release of two jailed human rights activists of Manipur.
The Hong Kong based, AHRC has written a letter to the Chairperson of the Bar Council of India to express concern over the detention of publicity secretary and secretary general of Threatened Indigenous People's Society (TIPS) Yengkokpam Langamba and Leitangthem Umakanta Meitei respectively. Mr Umakanta is a member of the All Manipur Bar Association and also a human rights activist. He is the spokesperson for Apunba Lup.
Both TIPS executives are now lodged at the Sajiwa Central Jail in Manipur.
It demanded an impartial inquiry into the incident and publish its findings within a reasonable time. The Amnesty International also urged safeguarding of lawyers and human rights activists in Manipur.
Meanwhile, protests continued in Manipur demanding the safe release of the two rights activists.
