Orchid Pharma's novel project to help tsunami hit women
Chennai, Sep 6 (UNI) Orchid Trust, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) division of the city based pharma major, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd,(OCPL) has announced the setting up of a Rs 77 lakh unit to produce Biofertiliser and Biocontrol Agents in the Pattipulam Village in Kancheepuram District of Tamil Nadu, to provide employment opportunities to the local Tsunami-affected women.
Participating in the foundation stone laying ceremony Mr K Raghavendra Rao, Managing Director of the OCPL said yesterday the trust would partner with the Rural Development Department, Government of Tamil Nadu and Asian Development Bank(ADB).
This project is being funded by Orchid Trust, the Rural Development Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu and ADB and would be called Development Organisation for Fisherwomen's Empowerment and Livelihood project (DOFWEL), he said.
The project would employ about 100 economically-backward and tsunami-affected women, he said and added that in the first phase of the project, Orchid Trust would conduct a survey to identify the economically-backward women who need jobs for livelihood. The survey would cover six identified SHGs. Based on skills and literacy levels of the SHGs, the women will be divided into three groups relating to production, process-cum-maintenance and marketing.
The selected women SHGs would be taught all three aspects, he added.
