Christians throng Church to see 'face of Jesus'

Shillong, Sep 6 (UNI) Thousands of people thronged a Presbyterian Church in Meghalaya today after rumours broke out of seeing the ''face of Jesus'' on the cross and strange light surrounding the cross inside the church.

People irrespective of religion, caste and creed were seen queuing up outside the Church in Malki locality here, since late last night to witness the phenomena and offered prayers.

Believers of Presbyterian Church, in this predominantly Christian state called this phenomenon as ''good omen''.

''It's the power of the Holy Spirit to revive the people and the society and to free them from the clutches of the Satan,'' a senior Presbyterian Church Member M B Khongwir told UNI here.

For the past few days, students in different schools, mostly run by Presbyterian Church, were singing hymns while some fainted or went into trance which they attributed to being touched by the Holy Spirit.

This strange behaviour was seen after the Church celebrated the centenary Revival service in Mairang, West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya on April 23, this year.

Terming the incident as ''divine phenomenon'', Mr Khongwir said that in the wee hours of Monday last unknown boy told a group of boys who were praying and singing in the church that he had witnessed Jesus entering the Church and moving towards the pulpit leaving behind a glow of light around the cross above the pulpit.

The ''unknown boy'' Mr Khongwir said was a messenger of God who vanished later.

''We can see the face of Jesus on the cross from the main door but it is not clear,'' Vanlalnghaka Ralte, a church elder of the Madanrynting Mizo Presbyterian Church claimed.

When asked if the glow behind the cross at the Malki church was a supernatural light, one of the keepers of the church, P Nongbri said that it was due to simple electric bulbs behind the cross, though he asserted that a local boy had witnessed ''the face of Jesus'' on Monday, which was no longer visible.
