Amarinder exhorts 2nd Sikh Bn to emulate heroic deeds

Chandimandir, Sep 6 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today called upon the brave soldiers of the 2nd Battalion of the Sikh Regiment to emulate the saga of countless heroic deeds unlike any other regiments keeping in view with its precious legacy and glorious past spanning over 150 years.

In his address on the occasion of '41st Battle Honour Day' (Raja Day Celebration) organized by the 2nd Sikh Battalion to honour the war widows, Capt Singh said that it was a great elation for him to be here to participate on this historic moment as he had also been a part of this regiment like his grand father Maharaja Bhupendra Singh and father Maharaja Yadvindera Singh.

He commended the supreme sacrifices made by the soldiers of this regiment in various Army operations of 1962, 1965 and 1971 besides in France, Germany, China, and Italy.

Capt Singh said that this regiment had done proud to the country in safeguarding its unity and integrity and was still in the fore-front of the Indian Army for its commitment and dedication in the service of the motherland.

The unprecedented gallantry deeds of the soldiers of this battalion in various Army operation in combating the internal insurgency and external aggression would ever act as a beacon to imbibe the spirit of nationalism and patriotism amongst the younger generation of recruits in the Army, he said.

Capt Singh reiterated his firm resolve that the state government was committed for the overall welfare of the ex-servicemen as well as serving defence personnel.

On the occasion, Capt Singh honoured and presented a cheque of Rs 51,000 and Rs 25,000 as a financial grant each to the 30 Veer Naris (war widows) and 42 battle causalities on behalf of the Punjab Government.

In his welcome address Commanding Officer of 2nd Sikh Battalion Col Karan Mahajan said that he was indebted to Capt Singh on behalf of the regiment who had graced the occasion with his benign presence.

He assured Capt Singh that this regiment would continue its endeavour to achieve new heights of glory in the service of the nation.

The function was attended by the Lt Gen P S Vadera (retd) being senior most Colonel of the Regiment, Lt Gen Manjit Bhullar, the then Commanding Officer, Brig Ran Singh and Lt Col Balwant Singh of 2nd Sikh Battalion, besides the serving officers, jawans and ex-servicemen of the regiment.

On the occasion, the family of Havaldar Joginder Singh gifted the Ashok Chakra Medal, awarded to him, to the unit.

Later Capt Singh presided over a meeting of the Regiment of Ludhiana Welfare Association and listened to the grievances of the ex-servicemen and assured them to mitigate their genuine problems and hardships in a time bound manner.
