AASU reiterates demand of Gauhati University VC resignation

Guwahati, Sep 6 (UNI) The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today demanded the immediate resignation of Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor G N Talukdar for 'failing' to execute his duties.

Addressing a press meet here, AASU advisor Sammujal Bhattacharyya alleged that the VC had failed to keep his assurance to the students' body that correct and complete degree final examinations results would be declared by August 31.

He said, ''The results were declared on mid-night of August 31 and the results were all faulty.'' He pointed out that the results were declared by an 'examination officer' though the authority rests only on the Controller of Examinations, and in his absence, on the in-charge of the position.

Further, Dr Bhattacharyya informed that, more students than whose names figured on the result sheets were declared placed in the First Class.

''Moreover, the second year exams results, in which many final year students had also appeared, are yet to be declared. The third year results for such students hold no value without the second year results first,'' he added.

Dr Bhattacharyya informed that the University had failed to issue proper mark-sheets for the Commerce stream students as their marking pattern was different. ''The GU has now directed the college authorities to get back the Commerce mark-sheets from the students,'' he added.

The AASU also criticised Mr Talukdar for failing to conduct fair medical entrance examinations.

The AASU advisor said the University allowed the same set of officials to conduct this year's exams after they failed to execute their responsibilities properly last year as was evident from the exposure of the illegal admissions made.

Dr Bhattacharyya demanded that the people who had rallied behind the VC when the AASU initially asked for his resignation publicly and unconditionally apologise to the student community.
