USAID builds sanitation system in TN village

New Delhi, Sep 5 (UNI) A US-funded community sanitation system for the tsunami-hit Chinnakappam village in Tamil Nadu went operational today.

US Consul General in Chennai David T. Hopper inaugurated the sanitation system to help the victims of the December 2004 tsunami, the US Embassy here said.

Directed through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and its local partners, the assistance is aimed at providing water and sanitation, restoring livelihood and providing youth with educational and recreational opportunities.

''We believe that these positive contributions will improve the quality of life of those affected by the tsunami,'' said Mr Hopper.

Under the USAID assistance, 121 household toilets have been built in Chinnakuppam, Periyakuppam, Periyakkuppam and Injambkakkam villages.

A waster water treatment system with a capacity of 1,000 litres per day has also been installed, the embassy said.

Support has also been provided for developing community waste management programmes. About 400 families in Chinnakuppam and Periyakuppam villages have received waste bins for collecting household waste, which would be recycled.
