Teachers' day celebrated in Bihar

Patna, Sep 5 (UNI) Despite cancellation of all official programmes following the death of former Chief Minister S N Sinha, students of Bihar today celebrated Tecahers' day in different schools and colleges across the state to pay respect to their beacons of learning and wisdom.

According to reports received from different parts of the state, students celebrated the occasion with great enthusiasm and organised cultural programmes, which were aimed at depicting teachers as capable of giving new direction to the society by cultivating fresh talents.

Addressing a seminar organised here, former Bihar Chief Minister Dr Jagannath Mishra said quality education was lifeline of the nation and government should take steps to improve education scenario in Bihar. After comparative study of different five-year plans, it had become clear that the Centre was steadily ''decreasing'' the allocation for education, while number of colleges, teachers and students continue to swell, he regretted.

Dr Mishra demanded from the state government to wind up the existing unaided education policy as it was responsible for hardship to 1.5 lakh teachers. These teachers were not getting their salaries due to ''erring'' policy of the state government despite their hard work, which could be called worst form of exploitation, he lamented.

Meanwhile, the state government had cancelled all official programmes to felicitate teachers due to two-day state mourning declared following demise of former Bihar Chief Minister Satyendra Narain Sinha, who passed away yesterday.
