Security of nuclear establishments revamped: Narayanan

New Delhi, Sep 5 (UNI) The government has revamped the security set up of nuclear establishments of the country in view of the intelligence reports about increased possibility of fidayeen attacks on them, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan said today.

''I assure you that we have completely revamped the security of nuclear establishments. We believe that the arrangements that have been made are adequate,'' Mr Narayanan told mediapersons.

He clarified this when asked about Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's admission that vital installations like nuclear establishments and army camps were facing more possibilities of fidayeen attacks as also economic and religious places.

In his inaugural speech at the Chief Ministers Conference on Internal Security, the Prime Minister justified the concerns being raised over the increased activities of ''externally funded and directed terrorist outfits'' and called for greater alertness by intelligence agencies and involving public in the war against terrorism.

''Concern about the increasing activities of externally inspired and directed terrorist outfits in the country is justified.

Intelligence agencies warn of further violent activities with the possibility of more fidayeen attacks on economic and religious places targeting vital installations including nuclear establishments and the like,'' the Prime Minister had said.

Mr Narayanan said a road map was evolved at today's meeting to deal with the twin problem of Naxalism and cross-border terrorism.

The road map involves closer cooperation between the Centre and the state governments and improving intelligence gathering as suggested by the Prime Minister, he added.

He said a crucial decision taken at the meeting was to establish an Empowered Group of Ministers to deal with cross-border terrorism and Naxalism. He said the states have been asked to fill all vacancies in the police force to strengthen it so that these issues can be resolved.

Asked about the government dragging its feet on release of five ULFA leaders as demanded by the insurgent group for resumption of direct talks, Mr Narayanan said the Centre has not shifted from its previous stand.
