SC annoyed with dragging religion in slaughtering animals

New Delhi, Sep 5 (UNI) The Supreme Court today expressed surprise on an application seeking slaughtering of animals separately through 'halal method' and 'jhatka method', ruling it would not entertain such a plea.

An application moved by the Buffalo Traders Welfare Association (BTWA) has sought directions to the MCD, to provide for separate entry and exit for animals and persons, involved in different method of slaughtering in the modernised slaughter house coming up at Ghazipur in east Delhi.

A bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhan, S B Sinha and A K Mathur made it clear that this court was not going to entertain such an application after sixty years of independence.

The application filed through P H Parekh, advocate, has sought separate entry and exit for slaughtering of animals, on the ground that followers of Islam were opposed to 'jhatka method' of killing animals as only 'halal method' is permitted under Islam.

Adjourning the hearing till September 26, one of the judges casually remarked, ''What difference does it make whether you slaughter an animal by this method or by that method''.

The new slaughter house is to replace an outdated one situated at Idgah in walled city.

The Court has been constantly reprimanding MCD, for not completing the construction of the new slaughter house as per schedule, due to which the cost of slaughter house has already gone up from Rs 65 crore to Rs 185 crore.

The opposition parties have demanded from MCD a CBI inquiry into the scandal.
