Leave no student as non-performer, Kalam tells teachers

New Delhi, Sep 5 (UNI) President APJ Abdul Kalam today honoured 313 teachers with National Awards, reminding them that they have the power to turn every student into a performer.

''I will consider myself to be a great teacher only when I am capable of elevating the average student to the high performance and when no student is left out as a non-performer,'' was one of the ten points in an oath, Dr Kalam administered to the awardees on the occasion of the Teachers Day today.

He also advised them to organize and conduct their life, in such a way that their life itself became a message for their students.

The President used the opportunity to share his emotions about three most favourite teachers of his career with the awardees.

Recalling the gist of the lessons he got from Iyadurai Solomon, Prof Thothatri Iyengar and Father Rector Kalathil, Dr Kalam said they taught him that he should work towards achieving whatever he desired.

He said all of them were ideal teachers for an eager young mind who was uncertain of the possibilities and alternatives that lay before him or her.

Dr Kalam said that he learnt from them to succeed in life and achieve results. One must understand and master ''three mighty forces-desire, belief and expectation,'' he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh said the government was committed to give all students the opportunities for good education.

There cannot be different kinds of education for different sections of the society, he said.
