Lapang seeks clarification from Sonia Gandhi on Robello's role

Shillong, Sep 5 (UNI) Former Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang has sought a clarification from Congress President Sonia Gandhi on AICC leader Mabel Robello's role with regard to 'political leadership crisis' in the state.

On Sunday, Ms Robello had accused Mr Lapang of 'raking up' the leadership issue in the state.

''I have written to Sonia Gandhi seeking a clarification on the statement made by Ms Robello,'' Mr Lapang said.

Terming the AICC statement at Ranchi as 'unwarranted,' the state Congress heavyweight said, the remark of Ms Robello has created confusion in the minds of the state leaders in the backdrop of Mrs Gandhi's assurance to give the final verdict on the ''change of leadership'' in the state.

Of the 29 Congress Legislators in the state, at least 15 dissident Congress legislators have openly revolted against Chief Minister J D Rymbai, demanding reinstatement of Mr Lapang as their Congress Legislature Party leader.

''We have confidence in Mrs Gandhi's leadership. We are expecting a transparent decision for a change of leadership,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee has expressed concern over the statement of Ms Robello.
