Pune, Sep 4 (UNI) A second year student was debarred from B J Medical College today for his alleged involvement in the ragging of a junior, who had to be admitted into an intensive care unit (ICU).

Akhilesh Shukla, a student of first year of the medical college, was admitted to the ICU of government-run Sassoon Hospital and his condition is reported to be stable now, College Dean Y L Yemul said.

The Dean told reporters that an inquiry committee has been set up under Rector Dr Ghorpade to probe into the ragging incident. ''After the inquiry committee's report, further course of action will be decided. For the time being, Nikhil has been debarred from attending classes and has been asked to vacate the hostel,'' the Dean added.

Akhilesh (17) from Raipur, Chattisgarh was made to do sit-ups by his senior Nikhil Sahu. Shukla first complained of body ache and exhaustion on August 30.

''He kept mum about the incident but instead said that he had gone for trekking. However, we conducted tests on him and found his abdomen and kidney functions a bit abnormal. When we questioned him further, he revealed that he was asked to do 200 sit-ups. We informed his parents and his sister who is also studying in Pune,'' the Dean informed.

The senior student Nikhil Sahu who was questioned by the inquiry committee, admitted to having ragged Akhilesh and gave a written letter to the committee. Nikhil himself has been admitted to city's Sancheti Hospital for a shoulder problem.

The police have also received a complaint and lodged a case under the Anti-Ragging Act.
