Lucknow, Sep 4 (UNI) A research paper presented by Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research (UPCSR) has been unanimously selected for the prestigious ''Noel Deerr Gold Medal Award 2005''.

The research paper was presented at the joint convention of Sugar Technologists Association of India (STAI), Deccan Sugar Technologists Association (DSTA) and South India Sugar Technologists Association (SISTA) at Hyderabad last year.

The paper ''Evaluation of sugarcane hybrid varieties under water stress condition'' was presented by a team of scientists led by S B Singh, Director, UPCSR, Shahjahanpur.

In India, drought has become a perpetual problem in sugarcane cultivation.

Every year, many states face water scarcity. The availability of water for irrigation has been declining gradually, thereby, the cost of irrigation is rising.

Under such aggravated drought conditions, the work is expected to give a tremendous benifit to sugarcane farmers, as well as to the sugar industry. Especially, in the present scenario when the climate is changing abruptly.
