SICA plans to open information centre for cotton buyers
Coimbatore, Sep 4 (UNI) South India Cotton Association (SICA) President C Soundara Raj has said SICA has planned to set up an information centre either at Rajkot or Ahmedabad in Gujarat soon for the benefit of those who procure cotton from the state.
Talking to newspersons here he said moe than 90 per cent of cotton produced in Gujarat were procured by mill owners and exporters from South India. The proposed information centre would help cotton buyers in South India.
He said SICA would soon launch a website to provide information on cotton.
Earlier, addressing the 27th annual general meeting of the association Mr Raj said cotton production in Tamil Nadu continued to be stagnant at five lakh bales against the demand of 75 lakh bales.
This is likely to go up further. The demand was being met by imports, he said.
Mr Raj said the new textile situation after the removal of all restrictions on imports and exports under WTO rules has resulted in growth opportunities for countries like India. It was expected that the total production in the country in 2006-07 will be higher than the previous year by 10 per cent after allowing for some damage in certain places.
