Mauresmo overcomes wobble to beat Santangelo

NEW YORK, Sep 4 (Reuters) Top seed Amelie Mauresmo survived a second-set wobble to beat Italian Mara Santangelo 6-3 3-6 6-2 and reach the US Open fourth round.

The world number one trailed 2-0 in the final set but found her game when she needed it most to clinch a hard-fought victory in just under two hours.

Frenchwoman Mauresmo took the first set with relative ease but the unorthodox style of Santangelo, the world number 37, began to tell and she levelled the match before breaking in the first game of the decider.

But Mauresmo broke back in the fourth game and again in the sixth and eighth to wrap up victory and set up a clash with twice former champion Serena Williams.
