Kashmir continues to remain cut off on day 4

Srinagar, Sept 4: Kashmir continued to remain cut off from the rest of the country via land route for the fourth consecutive day today after the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the lifeline of the Valley, was closed due to landslides triggered by heavy rains since Friday, leaving hundreds of passengers and vehicles stranded.

However, air traffic was normal with all flights operating as per schedule.

Many parts of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway up to Qazigund have been inundated with flood water. About 30 mt of road in between Ramsoo and Ramban had been badly damged due to the landslides.

The 434-km Srinagar-Leh highway was also closed for the fourth day today due to landslides at several places.

Both the highways have been closed for traffic since Friday morning after heavy rains triggered shooting stones and landslides at various places.

The Border Roads organisation (BRO) men have been mobilised and they were working to clear both the highways for vehicular traffic.

But, they were facing difficulties in getting the highways cleared because of non-stop rains.

Hundreds of passengers and vehicles have been stranded at several places along the highway.

Due to the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the Kashmir valley was facing acute shortage of essential commodities.
