Ganguly should have quit last year: Kapil

New Delhi, Sep 4 (UNI) Instead of dragging his career, Sourav Ganguly should have quit last year, feels India's World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a book release here today, the former allrounder was asked to comment on Ganguly's exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad when the former captain said, ''If you ask for my opinion, he should have called it a day last year. I don't know why he dragged his career.'' And Kapil was not sure if Ganguly has enough resilience, like Mohinder Amarnath, for a successful comeback.

''It's not that you can't make a comeback. Take Mohinder Amarnath's case, he proved selectors wrong so many times. Every time he was axed, he would stage a comeback. But not everyone is Amarnath. I don't know if Ganguly can do that but if you ask me, I think his career was over last year itself,'' Kapil explained.

Kapil also refused to attach much importance to pacer S Sreesanth's exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad.

''I think the selectors must have something in their mind when they decided to leave out Sreesanth. But he should not be disappointed and work hard to return to the side.

''Now if senior players like Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman can be dropped from the side, so can be Sreesanth,'' he said.

Kapil was happy with current crop of players, especially Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, and felt they have both the talent and ability to win the World Cup.

''Cricket has become so pacy these days and at times, I wish I could play like them,'' Kapil said.

He also refused to predict pre-tournament favourite for Champions Trophy and said, ''Whoever plays better, will win.'' UNI AY PDS PC1926
