Left wants India to play pro-active role in NAM

New Delhi, Sep 3 (UNI) Left parties want India to play a pro-active role at the Havana NAM Summit and present a blueprint for the revival of the movement to protect the interests of the developing countries against protectionist and hegemonist policies of the U S and its allies.

The CPI(M), CPI, Forward Bloc and RSP feel that the revival of the NAM, which was founded by India and other developing nations, was necessary as they were facing threat to their independence and security from the United States and its allies. The emergence of an unipolar world has resulted in instability in various parts of the world. There is an urgent need to create a new international world order.

NAM is presently examining a draft final declaration presented by Cuba to be signed by the heads of state and government at the six-day Summit beginning September 11.The draft envisages fighting poverty, the unequal economic order, terrorism and a non representative world order.

Talking to UNI, Left leaders, however, asked the Manmohan Singh government not to implement the suggestions of the Tarapore Committee on rupee full convertibility and pending 200 proposals on setting up Special Economic Zones in different parts of the country saying that these would cause huge loss to domestic economy, be it agriculture or the manufacturing sector.

CPI(M) stalwart and party polit bureau member Sitaram Yechury said, "India's pro-active role is very crucial at a time when the world is increasingly dominated by the US-led imperialism. The daunting need of the hour is that India should play the pivotal role to strengthen the solidarity of the developed and the underdeveloped nations-both economic and political." Mr Yechury, the CPI(M) parliamentary group leader, said as India was one of the founders of the NAM, it could be hoped that the Indian delegation led by the PM would play its due role at the 14th NAM Summit of 116 nations which" is expected to present an Action Plan to guide its determination to transform the present world order."
