Ganesh idol immersion peaceful in TN

Chennai, Sep 3 (UNI) The week-long Ganesh Chaturthi Festival in the city came to a close with the immersion of thousands of idols in the sea today, amid tight security.

The idol immersion ceremony passed off peacefully without any untoward incident.

Activists of various Hindu organisations brought the idols of the elephant god in various hues and sizes, in procession from different parts of the city on specific routes and immersed them in the sea at the six locations identified by the city police.

Groups belonging to the Shiv Sena, Hindu Makkal Katchi and Hindu Munnani took out processions and immersed the idols in the sea.

Cranes were positioned in all the six locations to lift the giant idols and immerse them in the sea.

Fishermen were involved in the immersion process and their boats used to carry the idols to the sea from the shore. High mast lights had also been erected near the shore.

Elaborate security arrangements were in place for the immersion with nearly 10,000 police personnel deployed for the purpose.
