CGWA issues directions to all states, UTs on water harvesting

New Delhi, Sep 3 (UNI) The Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) has has issued directions to several State Governments and Union Territories to take up all measures to adopt Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) systems to promote artificial artificial recharge of ground water in all over-exploited and critical areas in their jurisdictions.

The CGWA, constituted under the Environment (Protection) Act for regulating and controlling the managment of ground water utilisation has issued directions to the staes of Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Daman Diu and Pondicherry to take up measure like roof top rain water harvesting in the building bye laws.

The Authority had also issued directives to all group housing societies, institutes in all overexploited and critical areas in Delhi, Faridabad, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad in the National Capital Territory of Delhi where the ground water table is below eight metres from the ground surface to adopt RWH.

With the Ministry of Urban Development and States making it compulsory for all buildings to have RWH buildings on plots of 100 square metres and above in Delhi will be mandatory. The states of TN, AP, Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala and Rajasthan had made RWH mandatory in specified areas, an official release said.
