Chandigarh, Sep 3 (UNI) With high prevalence of asthma among children, a campaign will be launched in city schools shortly to spread awareness among students and teachers about the disease and how to manage it.

Disclosing this at a press conference here yester day, Dr Meenu Singh, Additional Professor, Pediatric Department, PGI and Dr S K Jindal, Head of Pulmonary Department, PGI, said that the adverse consequences of the disease was that children suffering from it have to frequently miss their school due to repeated illness.

This unique awareness programme will be initiated in about 40-50 schools, targetting children, teachers and also parents to ensure that every child with asthma is cared for and encouraged to lead a full and active life.

Recent studies done in Indian schools have shown that nearly 5-10 per cent of children are suffering from asthma. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified asthma in children as the single most common illness leading to absenteeism in school.

Dr Meenu Singh said that the positive aspect was that asthma could be fully controlled with modern medications and better awareness among children and parents.
