AIDS, an epidemic form in NE region due to drug abuse : NACO
Aizawl, Sep 03 (UNI) National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) has alarmed the bell over HIV/AIDS prevalence in Nagaland and Manipur while both the state governments was asked to take measure to combat the threat.
Union Health Ministry has forwarded caution to all the NE states expressing concern over the growing menace of AIDS and stated that prevalence of HIV/AIDS in six states of India has taken an epidemic form.
According to the statistics from NACO here, Andhra Pradesh has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalancy in the country with Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka following behind in this order and rest two are Nagaland and Manipur.
'' The cause of AIDS spread in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka is only due to homo and hetro sexual activities while intervenous drug injecting is the main cause of HIV infection in Nagaland and Manipur, '' the report indicated.
