SJAG announces Geno Sports awards

Panaji, Sep 2 (UNI) The Sports Journalists Association of Goa (SJAG) today announced the Geno Sports awards 2005-06 for sportspersons for their contribution in promoting sports in Goa.

SJAG general secretary Mangesh Borkar announced the names of the awardees here. The Best Sportsman of the Year award will be conferred to Saurabh Bandekar (cricket), Best Sportswoman of the Year award to Ms Ivana Furtado (chess), Best Organiser award to Chetan Desai (cricket) while Best Coach award goes to Mauricio Alfonso (football).

Besides, Nicolas Rodrigues (Sporting Club de Goa) was adjudged the ''NFL Player of the Year'' and Ms Sushmita Vasta was adjudged ''Best Promising Player in Diving''. Goa's Santosh Trophy team was adjudged the ''Best Team'' and Sesa Goa Football Academy was adjudged the ''Best Sports Promoter''.

St Xavier College, Mapusa, was adjudged the Best College in Sports, St Xavier Higher Secondary School, Mapusa, was the Best Higher Secondary School in Sports while Fatima Convent High School, Margao, became the Best School in Sports.

The SJAG will also felicitate Francis Rebeiro, the Sports Editor of ''Herald'' and Satish Naik of Doordarshan for their contribution in sports journalism. The awards presentation function will be held here on September 7.
