Paes-Stosur pair crashes out of US Open mixed doubles
New York, Sep 2 (UNI) Leander Paes and his Australian partner Samantha Stosur made a shocking first-round exit in the mixed doubles event, losing 6-3, 2-6, 5-10 to the unseeded Belarussian duo of Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka at the US open here.
Paes, who teamed up with Czech Martin Damm to enter the second round of the men's doubles event, and Stosur squandered a one set advantage to allow their unheralded rivals make a comeback and cause the upset.
The third seeds started off well and hardly put a foot wrong to race away with the opening set in no time but were caught off guard by Mirnyi and Azarenka in the next.
The Indo-Australian pair failed to maintain the momentum against their resurgent rivals, who wasted little time in grabbing the opportunity after Paes and Stosur let their guard down for a while.
Mirnyi and Azarenka raised their game to turn the tables on the Indo-Australian pair and equalised by winning the second set.
Having lost their rhythm, Paes and Stosur lacked fire in the third set and surrendered the match in the tie-breaker to make a shocking opening round exit from the event.
However, despite the disappointment, Paes had reasons to smile after reaching the second round of the men's doubles event. Paes and Damm are seeded sixth in the event and the duo hardly broke a sweat in sealing the match against the Czech pair of Petr Pala and Robin Vik 6-1, 6-2.
The Indo-Czech pair will now take on the Austrian-German pair of Alexander Peya Bjorn Phau in the next round.
Paes' former partner Mahesh Bhupathi has, meanwhile, crashed out of both the men's doubles and mixed doubles event.
