New Delhi, Sep 2 (UNI) The alarm bells sounded by the cola controversy and recent studies showing pesticide residues in many food stuffs has set the ball rolling among intellectuals as to how to save Indian society from such harmful products.

A unique suggestion in this regard was made today by none other than Former Defence Minister and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman K C Pant who made out a case for a multi-disciplinary task force of experts who will look into the production and use of pesticides.

Such a Task Force will also go into the question of preservation of the quality of surface ground water and in other related areas to lay down standards covering industry and agricultural practices.

Mr Pant made these remarks while inaugrating the 22nd National Convention of Chemical Engineers here. The event was organsied by the Institute of Engineers.

"Even if the acceptance of such standards may impose some costs on the government and industry, these should be viewed against the major gains in terms of public health and the benefits of scientifically- regulated use of toxic chemicals," he said.

Mr Pant, who expounded many innovative ideas into the development model of the Tenth Plan, cited an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study which found pesticide residues in more than 50 per cent of food items that it tested, with 20 per cent of these commodities containing pesticides above the maximum residue level.

The study said residue levels in dairy products often exceeded the guidelines of the WHO and the Indian Health Ministry.

The Former Plan Panel Deputy Chief said 21st century will witness the flowering of green science and technology.

"The heightened environmental consciousness of the international community is putting pressure on industry, including petroleum industry to reduce environmental pollution and achieve sustainable development. It is also putting pressure on national governments, and industry should recognise that, if any action is perceived to be detrimental to social-well being of the common good, there is likely to be a surge of public opinion which may be difficult for democratic governments to resist. In order to forestall such an eventuality, it is in the enlightened self-interest of industry to evolve standards of behaviour which can allay the apprehensions of society at large", he said.

Mr Pant said environmental friendly green technology will become the major destination for petroleum research and development.

Bio-technology and new generation of clean injected fluid will prevent reservoir damage to maximum degree. Biocatalyst and bio-desulphuring technology will bring great prospect for development of refining industry.
