International seminar cum coin exibition of ancient times starts

Agartala, Sep 2 (UNI) A two-day international seminar cum coin exhibition was inaugurated at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan by Governor Dinesh Nandan Sahaya today.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sahaya stressed the importance of Numismatology.

''Numismatology epitomizes the story of civilizations itself,'' he said, adding that due to the efforts of Numismatologists, a series of coins, issued by the kings of Tripura, during the period of Ratna Manikya 1 to the last prince Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, have been found. '' These coins occupy a unique place in Indian numismatics,'' he added.

Such seminars and exibitions would definitely expose the rich culture and heritage of Tripura to the outside world, he noted.

The exibition was inaugurated by Secretary of London Numismetic Society, N G Rhodes.

Professor, Dr Emanuel Haq from Bangladesh, a renowned Numismetologist, said several ancient coins of the Samatata and Harikela period had been excavated from Eastern India and Comilla District of South East Bangladesh.

A book on the history, culture and coins of ancient Samatata and Harikela had also been inaugurated on the occasion by the Governor.

Former Director of the National Museum, New Delhi, R D Chaudhury, Chairperson of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, Shankar Das and Chairman of the Rajendra Kristishala, Jahar Acharjee, were also present on the occasion.
