Heavy showers lash Delhi, more downpours likely in the day

New Delhi, Sep 2 (UNI) Heavy showers lashed Delhi for the second consecutive day today even as the weathermen forecast more rains in the day as well as tomorrow.

For the second day, the capital recieved intermittent showers.

The first spell of heavy showers, which began after midnight last night and lasted till the early hours of the morning, were followed by another spell of light showers in the forenoon, followed by a spell of heavy showers during the late afternoon.

While a total of over 100 mm of rainfall was recorded in the capital since yesterday morning till 0830 hours today, another 42 mm rainfall was recorded till 1730 hours today.

Thus, the capital has, since yesterday morning, recieved nearly 150 mm of rainfall.

The rainfall, coupled with southerly winds, brought coolness to the weather in Delhi, providing tremendous relief from the warm and humid weather of the last week.

The minimum temperature today was recorded at 23 degree Celsius, two degrees below normal while the maximum was 29.6 Degree C, four degrees below normal.

More heavy showers are likely in Delhi and its neighbouring areas later today and tomorrow. The weathermen have forecast a genarally cloudy sky with intermittent showers, one or two of them heavy, during the next 24 hours.

''The depression over East Rajasthan weakened into a well marked low pressure area in the afternoon of yesterday. The system further weakened into a low pressure area today morning and now lies over Haryana and neighbourhood. Under its influence, widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy showers at a few places is likely over Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu&Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal during the next 24 hours,''the Met office said.

Following today's showers, and those on Wednesday morning which resulted in nearly 60 mm of rainfall in the capital, Delhi has recieved a total rainfall of 636 mm rainfall since June, which is more than 20 per cent in surplus of the normal rainfall in Delhi during the season.

Frequent lulls in rainfall activity over the last few months had led to apprehensions that Delhi might recieve less than normal rainfall. However, showers of the last week have dispelled these fears.
