Excessive force used on in Khurd police action: NCW

New Delhi, Sep 2 (UNI) The inquiry committee of the NCW in its interim recommendations on police action in Uttar Pradesh's Bajhera Khurd area has said large scale and excessive force was used on villagers and women and children were beaten up in violation of the law.

According to the recommendations, police along the ''private goons and henchmen'' of the Reliance industries indulged in large scale violence on August 17 in the village.

The three-member inquiry committee, headed by Commission member Manju Hembrom, visited the village on August 30 for an on the spot assessment of the reports about the incident.

''The National Commission for Women is deeply concerned about the brazen assault on the rights and dignity of women and children, .... it appears they were targeted to terrorise the villagers into submission...,'' NCW chairperson Girija Vyas told a news conference.

The Committee met about 200 villagers in Bajhera Khurd area and during the visit administrative or police officer was not present to explain their stand, she added.

Ms Vyas said the officials will soon be summoned to the Commission.

The Interim recommendations said necessary legal action needed to be taken against the police officials concerned.

''The police force exceeded its brief by illegally entering the houses of the villagers without any search warrants and indulged in large scale beating of women and children in gross violation of the law,'' they said.

Police had resorted to use of force against villagers of the area who were protesting the land acquisition process for the Reliance Energy power project at Dadri.

The state government had deployed a large number of police personnel including those from the Rapid Action Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary in the area.
