Sensex gains 79 pts on global cues

Mumbai, Sep 1: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) made a strong beginning for the month of September and posted a solid close for the week, ending 79 points up in the green after volatility reigned the early part of the day today.

An all round buying by retail investors on global cues assisted sensex to close 0.68 per cent up at 11,778.02 points compared to the previous close of 11,699.05. Short covering by investors in the later part of the day helped sensex to mitigate losses. Sensex ended the week up by 1.8 per cent over the previous weeks' close.

The Midcap was up by one per cent and the Small cap by 0.61 per cent.

The breadth in the market on the last day of the week turned positive in favour of 1,345 advances as against 1,179 declines and 62 scrips remained unchanged out of the total of 2,586 scrips that were traded on the BSE counters today.

Amongst the sectoral indices on the BSE, the pack of gainers was led by the Auto sector which was up by 2.13 per cent to 5050.45 points, Health Care Sector by 2.03 per cent to 3,610.33, Capital Goods by 1.03 per cent to 7794.59 points, Bankex by 1.43 per cent to 5,383.86 points and the Metals sector by 0.80 per cent to 8,158.84 points.

There were no losers on the last day of trading amongst the sectoral indices.

Besides, the Dollex-30 was up by 0.66 per cent to 2078.62 points, Dollex-100 by 0.83 per cent to 1,330.58 points and the Dollex-200 was up by 0.88 per cent to 505.05 points.

The major gainers on the BSE-30 index were Bajaj Auto up by 3.44 per cent to Rs 2,790.30, Dr Reddy's Lab up by 3.16 per cent to Rs 743.30, Cipla up by 3.02 per cent to Rs 257.50, HDFC Bank up by 2.41 per cent to Rs 873.70, Tata Motors up by 2.16 per cent to Rs 863.40, Ranbaxy up by 2.11 per cent to Rs 415.40, ICICI bank up by 2.11 per cent to Rs 609.10, HLL up by 1.79 per cent to Rs 238.80, Maruti Udyog up by 1.61 per cent to Rs 875.25 and Reliance Energy up by 1.29 per cent to Rs 445.05.

The losers on the sensex were: ONGC down by 1.06 per cent to Rs 1,203.05, Satyam Computers down by 1.03 per cent to Rs 799.85, ITC down by 0.86 per cent to Rs 189.60, BHEL down by 0.32 per cent to Rs 2,253.75, Wipro down by 0.17 per cent to Rs 517.00 and Grasim Industries down by 0.03 per cent to Rs 2,252.90.
