Road blocked to protest killing of youth in Manipur by army

Imphal, Sep 1 (UNI) The Mayai Lambi road at Imphal West was blocked today by angry residents of Shamurou area to protest against the killing of a youth, Longjam Surjit, shot dead by the 22 Maratha Light Infantry early this morning.

The Asom Rifles sources, however, said the troops had gone into the area at around 1300 hrs in the morning after getting information that militants were moving around.

Official sources said two persons were seen on horse back.

One of them fired towards the troops and the army also fired back.

However, one of them managed to escape.

Police rushed to the area to control the crisis. They found the dead body at Shamurou.

A public meeting was also held today to discuss about the army activities.
