Rioteers in Essar refinery case sent in judicial custody

Jamnagar, Sep 1 (UNI) A local court today sent 28 people arrested for rioting near the Essar refinery complex on Wednesday, in judicial custody.

The police had sought a three-day remand which was rejected by the court. Scores of labourers of the Dewariya village rioted and set a fire two vehicles and a police jeep after one of their colleagues was hit by a speeding car on Wednesday morning. They also ransacked the company's security office and took away guns and cartridges.

They later attacked the police who had rushed to quell the violence.

Police had to fire 15 rounds and lob teargas shells to control the situation.

According to police sub-inspector H P Doshi the damage to property was to the tune of Rs 8.5 lakh. 4,000 labourers have been charged under IPC sections 143, 148, 149, 332, 397, 435 and under Damage to Public Property Act 1984, section 4 and Bombay Police Act Sec 135(1).
