Prez to visit TN, security tightened
Chennai, Sep 1 (UNI) Elaborate security arrangements have been made in Chennai City and at Ambur in Vellore District of Tamil Nadu in view of President A P J Abdul Kalam's two-day visit to the state on September three and four.
The country's first citizen will arrive here from Delhi by a special IAF aircraft on September three at 2140 hrs and will stay at Raj Bhavan overnight.
Dr Kalam will take part in the 150th year celebrations of the University of Madras. He will also inaugurate the renovated Senate House on the morning of September four.
He will then board a helicopter to Vellore from where he will reach Ambur by road to attend the centenary celebrations of the Ambur Muslim Educational Society, before returning to Chennai to attend a series of functions.
The President will inaugurate the centenary celebrations of the Indian Bank at the Chennai Trade Centre and proceed to Madras High Court to participate in the first anniversary function of the Tamil Nadu Mediation and Conciliation Centre.
Later, he will present the Tholkappiar Award to DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at Kalaivanar Arangam and wind up his tour with a visit to the R and D Centre of the National Agro Foundation at the Taramani Campus of the Anna University.
After interacting with the farmers there, he will leave for New Delhi by the special IAF aircraft at 2130 hrs.
Meanwhile, police sources told UNI here today that security had been intensified at all vital installations in the city and in Vellore District.
More than 5,000 police personnel have been deployed on security duty and metal detectors are installed at all the six venues where the President will visit. Invitees will be allowed entry only after thorough frisking.
Tight vigil is being maintained across the city and intensified vehicle checks are done to prevent any untoward incident.
