NF railway to restore Lumding-Guwahati rail route

Aizawl, Sep 1 (UNI) Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway has decided to restore the Lumding-Guwahati metre gauge track from the Barak valley, Mizoram and Tripura.

State Transport Commissioner R K Thanga told UNI that NF railway had already submitted a Rs 30 crore project proposal to the Centre and the restoration work is expected to commission immediately after final orders from the Railway Ministry, Mr Thanga also said the extention work of the existing railway route from Bairabhi (Asom) to Sairang here along with the 80 km gauge conversion from Katakual to Bairabhi would start soon.

''The Guwahati-Lumding metre guage track had been abandoned after the Silchar-Lumding gauge conversion project got underway a decade ago, he said.

The restoration of the metre gauge track would help the commuters travel directly from Guwahati to Silchar, he added.

Apart from this the Ministry had also decided to convert the existing Silchar-Lumding metre gauge to broad gauge by 2009, Mr Thanga said.
